  1. Alpha Software Bulletin Board (BBS) Instructions
  2. (Basic instructions)
  3.  
  4. The Environment:
  5. The BBS is divided into separate conferences. For the most part each 
  6. conference represents a different Alpha software product. When you first log 
  7. on to the BBS you will be presented with a menu. This is the Main Menu and 
  8. you are in the Main Board conference.
  9.  
  10. There are currently seven other Conferences on the Alpha BBS:
  11.     1. Alpha Four version 1.1b
  12.     2. RPL conference
  13.     3. dB*Quick conference
  14.     4. Keyworks conference
  15.     5. Utilities conference
  16.     6. Alpha4V2 conference
  17.     7. The Development conference
  18.  
  19. The conferences serve as individual and distinct areas for discussing issues 
  20. pertaining to that subject. You can leave a message in these conferences for 
  21. other users or read the messages left by other users. For example, if you have 
  22. a question regarding, Alpha4V2, then join the Alpha4V2 conference (6).

  24. How to join a conference:
  25. -------------------------
  26. When you want to leave a message or read messages or you want to download a 
  27. file you must join a conference: To join a conference; from the BBS prompt 
  28. press J<ENTER>. You will then be given a list of conferences similar to the 
  29. above list.

  31. Select the desired conference eg, for the Alpha4V2 conference press 6<enter>.  
  32. You will now be in the Alpha Four version2 conference.

  35. How to leave a conference:
  36. --------------------------
  37. When you are done in a particular conference and either want to join another 
  38. conference or get back to the main menu you must leave (Abandon) the 
  39. conference. To do this press A<ENTER> at the BBS prompt. This will get you 
  40. back to the Main Board conference.

  42. How to read mail:
  43. -----------------
  44. To Read the mail that is new for you, type: R S <ENTER>. 
  45. For further help type: Help R<ENTER>.

  47. How to reply to a message just read:.
  48. From the command line type RE<enter>. 
  49. This will allow you to reply to a message. Once you have completed your message 
  50. press the Escape key on your keyboard. This will allow you to exit the text 
  51. editor. Once you have abandoned the editor, you can save the message by 
  52. pressing S <ENTER>.

  54. How to download a file:
  55. -----------------------
  56. There are quite a few files on our BBS that are useful for users to download. 
  57. They contain technical information and help on common problems. These files 
  58. cannot be read from within the BBS and must be downloaded to your computer 
  59. for reading.

  61. Most of these files are located in the conference that they are applicable to. 
  62. For example there is a file called A4HELP.ZIP that is located in the Alpha4V2 
  63. conference(6). This is a database that contains valuable help information 
  64. regarding Alpha Four.

  66. To download this particular file, first join the Alpha4V2 conference 
  67. (see "How to join a conference" above). Then to locate the files that you 
  68. want. To locate a file press L<ENTER> at the BBS prompt. To let the BBS know 
  69. you want to view a list of all files type *.*<enter> to the Search filename 
  70. prompt. Then type A<enter> to the sysops uploads and users uploads. Once you 
  71. locate the file that you wish to download, remember its exact filename.

  73. When you have located a file to download you can instruct the BBS to download 
  74. the file by pressing D<enter> at the BBS prompt. The BBS will prompt you for 
  75. the name of the file and will check to see if it is valid. Next it will 
  76. display the file transfer protocols that you have selected. You have the 
  77. chance to modify the file transfer protocol that you are now using.

  79. File protocols represent the options you have available for downloading the 
  80. file. For more information on file protocols and which are supported by your 
  81. modem or communications software, please consult your communication software 
  82. or modem manual.

  85. Important notes about the BBS:
  86. ------------------------------

  88. If you are leaving a question that you want responded to by an Alpha technical 
  89. representative, you MUST address the message to the sysop. Messages are 
  90. usually answered within one working day.
  91. Questions left to "ALL" on one of the conferences are assumed to be for other 
  92. users and will most likely not get a responce from the sysop.

  94. When you are done using the BBS, please use the (G)oodbye option. Do not just 
  95. hang up.
